More Information on blue crabs
The scientific term for the crustaceans is callinectes sapidus. Some people call them the Chesapeake blue crab, while others refer to them as the Atlantic blue crab. They have four pairs of smaller legs and a fifth pair shaped like paddles. The fifth pair of legs helps to make them strong swimmers. They usually have bright blue claws and olive-colored shells. The claws of adult females sometimes have a red tip. Males often grow to eight inches across. Females tend to be slightly smaller. The largest blue crab ever caught in the Chesapeake weighed 1.1 pounds and was 10.72 inches across.
Where crabs live
Blue crabs live in estuaries and brackish coastal lagoons. While most famous for living in and around the Chesapeake Bay, they actually can be found in many areas of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Blue crabs can be found as far north as Nova Scotia and as far south as Uruguay. They have also invaded Europe. They have been found in the Meditteranean, as well as the Spanish, Portuguese, and French coasts.
