Blink your eyes and you’ll miss Bruce’s Seafood on Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania. Keep them open, and you’ll have a pleasant, affordable steamed crab experience.
Follow the driveway, and you’ll find a quaint crab shack, complete with a crabby mural disguising the business’ walk-in freezer.
Inside, you’ll find friendly workers, one working the counter and one steaming up crabs. Without even asking, the woman working the counter offered to take us back to see the crabs steaming in two large pots.
On the Sunday we went on the hunt for crabs, the choice was $35/dozen for extra large crabs from North Carolina or $20/dozen for the mediums from Reidville, Va. Seeing the $20 crabs steaming up, we opted for three dozen and headed outside to sit at one of two picnic tables and wait.
Bruce’s doesn’t have indoor seating, only the couple of picnic tables out front, but the fun and “crabby” attire will keep you amused as you wait. Of course, you could wait inside. But be forewarned. You could be tempted to pick up a pound or two of shrimp or some of the other goodies Bruce’s has to offer.
The crabs turned out, for the most part, to be full and meaty. While Bruce’s gave us additional seasoning, it wasn’t needed. For size and taste, the crabs get a 4. For value, they’re a 5 on a scale of 5.
